• The hygienist will remove any plaque or tartar build-up in those areas brushing cannot reach.
• The hygienist will perform a professional clean and polish to remove any superficial stains on your teeth, using special equipment such as hand scalers or an ultra-sonic (water scaler) and pastes.
• An important part of your visit is for the hygienist to offer tailored advice on how to maintain good dental health and demonstrate techniques you can use at home.
• Foam fluoride treatment may be provided to help form a protective layer on the tooth's surface. To increase enamel resistance against acid attacks.
KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLEAN AND HEALTHY
Regular hygiene visits
• It is recommended that you regularly visit a dental hygienist to ensure your mouth stays clean, healthy and to prevent gum disease so the risk of all oral conditions is reduced.
• Generally, patients should attend every 6 months, should there be signs of gum disease you could be advised to visit the hygienist on a more regular basis. If you are in orthodontic treatment you should visit the hygienist every 4 months for fixed braces and every 6 months for Invisalign treatment.
• Seeing a hygienist can also reduce your risk of heart disease, strokes and diabetes. Recent studies have shown a link between heart attacks and strokes to gum disease, resulting from poor oral hygiene.

HYGIENIST SERVICE
FAQs
In this section we have included answers to some common questions about hygienist appointments.
Do I need to be referred by a dentist?
In many cases patients are referred to a hygienist by their dentist but this is not essential. You can book an appointment with our hygienist directly yourself without seeing a dentist first.
How do I prepare for a hygienist appointment?
As with any dental appointment, before you arrive you should brush and floss your teeth and use mouthwash. This ensures that the dental hygienist won't have to spend time clearing debris from your teeth before professionally cleaning them.
Will the treatment hurt?
In most cases, a dental hygiene treatment should be relatively painless. However if you do have any discomfort the hygienist can use anaesthetic gels or local anaesthetic.
Who carries out hygiene treatment at Marsh House?
