ABOUT ORAL SURGERY

Oral surgery is a specialist branch of dentistry which is concerned with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases or abnormalities in the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

We are dedicated to offering a complete oral health service to our patients, so having an oral surgery specialist in-house means you can rest assured we have the experience, knowledge and effective treatments to keep the whole of your mouth healthy.

WHAT IS ORAL SURGERY?

Specialist care

Whilst routine procedures such as tooth extraction can be carried out by your dentist, more complex matters such as those relating to the jaw or face may need to be dealt with by an oral surgeon. Our oral surgery specialists have the knowledge and skills to deal with issues involving the jaw and facial area such as:

● Removal of impacted and/or diseased teeth
● Correcting facial trauma to the jaw and/or mouth area
● Orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery to improve issues with breathing, chewing speech and facial profile
● Evaluation and treatment of pathologic conditions such as cysts or/and tumours of the mouth or face and severe oral infections
● Diagnosing and treating facial pain caused by temporomandibular joint issues or other types of joint problems

There are other treatments our oral surgeon can perform, and we will advise and inform you about this if we believe a procedure is necessary.

SHOULD YOU BE WORRIED ABOUT ORAL SURGERY?

What to expect

Oral surgery is more common than you might think. In fact, having a tooth removed is a type of oral surgery, so there is no need to let the terminology worry you. Many surgical treatments can be carried out at our practice, under local anaesthetic, just as you would for any other dental procedure.

Before any treatment is carried out, we will provide a detailed explanation of your options and answer any questions you may have. Depending on the type of oral surgery involved, you may require either local or general anaesthetic.

We will thoroughly explain the specifics of your particular treatment plan prior to any procedures taking place and can assist in answering any questions you may have.
