National Smile Month

National Smile Month

National Smile Month is organised by the Oral Health Foundation and is the largest campaign in the UK for promoting good oral health. The aim of the campaign is to emphasise the importance of good oral health and to guide the public on how to properly care for their teeth and gums.

With the help of thousands of participants and organisations they work to promote three key pieces of advice:

  1. Reduce the amount of sugary food and drinks in your diet
  2. Attend regular dentist appointments, as often as your dentist recommends
  3. Using fluoride toothpaste, brush your teeth at the end of every single night and at least one other occasion during the day

Eating Right

However, there are many other ways to maintain excellent oral health. Your diet can make a huge contribution to teeth protection, as consuming foods high in calcium and fibre can be very beneficial.

For example:

  • Milk, yogurts and cheese are high in calcium which helps to strengthen the tooth’s enamel. The probiotics in a yogurt can also help your gums by encouraging beneficial bacterial override cavity causing bacteria.
  • Carrots are high in fibre which can promote saliva production and therefore reduce the risk of cavities. They are also high in vitamin A which can help with other aspects of your health.
  • Celery is great for scraping food particles and bacteria off your teeth after meals. It is also packed with antioxidants vitamins A and C which provide your gums with a health boost.
  • And when it comes to drinks, steer clear of too much juice, soda or sports drinks as they can be loaded with sugar. Water is also your best option if you want to stay healthy.

Using the Right Products

It’s also important to take notice of what type of products you’re using to clean your teeth with. A soft bristled brush, whose head and bristles are small enough to clean out the food debris in the crevices of your molars, is what you need.

Fluoride toothpaste is also essential, as the fluoride helps protect your teeth’s enamel and quickens the remineralization process. This will form new enamel crystals that are stronger, larger and more resistant to acids. Fluoride mouthwash can also fight against cavities, which are infamously known for causing permanent damage to your teeth by creating small holes and openings.

What To Do Now

Setting a proper oral hygiene routine that you will stick to everyday can save your oral health from a lot of damage. Keep your pearly whites shining bright and gums feeling fresh by brushing twice daily for a total of 2 minutes each time, with fluoride products, flossing daily, visiting your dentist regularly and maintaining a healthy diet.
